History of Handpolo

The sport of Handpolo, locally known as Toop-Soo, is played in shallow water about 100 cm deep, making it accessible for everyone. The game is played between two teams of 8 players each, with 4 active players in the water and 4 substitutes outside. It consists of two 15-minute halves. The simple rules of the game make Handpolo suitable for beginners of all genders and ages. The creation of Handpolo has made it possible for enthusiasts who cannot swim to enjoy sports in shallow waters. Its simple rules allow it to be played both at a recreational level (for beginners) and at a professional level (for physically fit athletes) across all age groups. It also has the potential to develop into an Asian and international sport. Handpolo can be played safely in the shallow areas of swimming pools, rivers, and seas, without the risk of drowning. With minimal preparation or background, the game is suitable for all age groups, both men and women. The necessary equipment for a Handpolo match includes a ball, caps, and two goals measuring 100 × ۲۰۰ cm. From 2019 to 2023, Handpolo was successfully introduced and well-received in the 4th, 5th, and 6th Student Public Sports Olympiads for both male and female university students in Iran. As a completely Iranian sport, it received official approval from the Iranian Ministry of Sports and Youth in 1963 (Iranian calendar year 1342) and began its activities as a recognized discipline within the Federation of Public Sports. With its potential to create an energetic and exciting atmosphere, this sport can foster healthy competition for both beginners and professional athletes. Main Rules and Regulations of Handpolo The game consists of two continuous 15-minute halves. Each Handpolo team has 4 main players and 4 substitutes. The ball can be carried by walking, running, or swimming. Players may hold the ball with both hands while moving or playing. Throwing the ball into the opponent’s goal from one’s own half is not allowed and the goal will be disallowed. There is no goalkeeper in Handpolo; any player may defend the goal. Ball possession for each team lasts 30 seconds and is renewed after a throw that hits the opponent’s goal or results in a score. Hitting the ball or opponent, holding and submerging the ball, splashing water, shouting, or rough play are fouls. Players sent out due to fouls must remain out for 30 seconds; after the third ejection, they cannot return to the game. Each team is allowed one 1-minute timeout per half. Substitutions are unlimited but must be made with the referee’s permission. More than one player standing inside the goal area while defending is a foul.
